Anywho. I’ve been meaning to probe ChatGPT and figured I would drop the conversation (interview?) here. Some of it was testing, some of it was curiosity. At one point I realized that how I was approaching the bot was very similar to any discussion I’ve had over text – whether Discord today or forums a decade ago. Frankly, its ability to inject insightful feedback was impressive. If I wanted to pitch some conjectures, it can conjure up retorts for me to at least ponder, even if I find the evidence or position to be faulty. A first line of stress testing I suppose.

I’ve been thinking about this conversation, what I could use it for and what not. The difficult part is of course that this model isn’t trained to retort factually. Trying to pin down what topics ChatGPT can provide reliable responses for is going to be difficult. Here are a few questions that I have a few categories for

  1. Popular, public discussion consistent

  2. Popular, public discussion not consistent

  3. Technical, discussion consistent

  4. Niche, who knows

In separate tests I asked it to give me a counterargument to 2+2=4, and it returned that it could not because it was a mathematical truth. Fair enough. But if I ask it to counter a definition provided in Mainstream Science on Intelligence, an article written and signed by the leaders in intelligence research at the time. It pulls up some very old arguments that float around self-help or pop science articles. 1950s discussions of the g factor versus the s factors,, Gould’s Mismeasure of Man from the 80s, and Gardner’s multiple intelligences of the 90s. Not so useful in 2023. This makes sense, there is so much material out there referencing them that the training data would suggest the issue is ongoing within the research circles. However, if I ask it to get me information on a brain process only really covered in research, then it does a pretty good job. If I ask it to get me evidentiary shortfalls, it does about as well as a procrastinating undergrad. I threw in a philosophical thought experiment that only one other person in my life knows, and that’s the person that told me about it. It answered reasonably, although it was definitely wrong on a few points.

What I got out of this is if the subject has a large corpus of inaccurate or misconstrued text floating around, the credibility of the response is going down the drain. The smaller the sample size the less clear that becomes. I’ve heard a number of stories about technical responses being patently wrong, although there seem to be enough textbooks out there to get many technical answers right.

Overall, I don’t have the confidence in this technology to use it and put my name on it. What I could use it for is to probe a position I wrote for potential holes, even if its response wastes my ten seconds with counterarguments from Psychology Today. I think it could be useful for “covering all of your bases”, especially in an early draft.
